7 Steps to a Zero $ Closet Makeover- Let’s Get Organized!

Once a year, I try to PURGE things in my closet. I have acquired baskets and hooks over the years to keep my closet as organized as possible. There are so many ways to use these inexpensive items to bring an impressive look. My advice would be first to use what you have on hand instead of  going out spending money on items you may not need. I guarantee you have things lying around the house that you could use in your closet makeover.

Search for: baskets, Command hooks and extra hangers for a great start. Check out my post on 6 Ways to use Command Products in Your Home.

Here are a few of the best ideas to organize your closet.

1. Start by PURGING, touch every piece of clothing, purse, shoe, scarf, and think about “have I used this in the last year”- if not DONATE! Try to sell high-end items at Plato’s Closet or on eBay.

Before - I know it’s terrible!

2.After purging, take EVERYTHING out of your closet. Giving you a blank canvas to imagine how you want to utilize your space.

3. Another tip I would like to offer is to place the clothing items you plan to keep back in the closet with the hangers in the opposite direction. This will allow you to better track the items you actually wear for the upcoming year. Once you wear the items in your closet, turn the hangers in the correct hanging position. Check out more here with a post from Home Storage Solutions.

I decided to get rid of most if the store bought plastic hangers to give the closet a uniform look. Maggie was supervising the whole operation:)
Store flip flops in a plastic shoe box, I was able to fit three pairs in this one I purchased from The Dollar General for just 1.00!
These hangers were purchased from Sams Club but there are so many options out there- I have seen them sold at TJ Maxx, Walmart and Amazon. Click the image to get yours.

4.I have a few large baskets (Ultra-Deep by Sterilite)  that I decided to put leggings, tank tops, purses, and hats in. These baskets are my favorite! I have used them over the years for so many things they have held up fabulously. This will free up drawer space; also, using the file folding method is very beneficial -see this cheat sheet for tips from Marie Kondo.

5.Next, I decided to use an over the door shoe organizer. I organized my shoes by season- since I have a door in my closet and bedroom. I used one for fall and winter shoes and one for spring and summer shoes. Place the appropriate season on the closet door, or whichever is the most convenient for you.

A towel bar with curtain rings is a great way to organize hats and visors.

6. All clothes were placed back into the closet and sorted together by season, color, & type. Since I didn’t have any professional storage drawers in my closet, I used a plastic 3- drawer system to store my socks and under clothes. This would also be great for tank tops, swimsuits, scarves, etc…

7. If you have shelving of any kind try and utilize this area for bulky items that may take up too much space if they were hanging in your closet. For example, I fold sweatshirts and jeans and place them on the wire shelving. Not only does this save you space but it gives you a great visual when locating clothing items. If you have any shelving real estate leftover, place boots and tennis shoes that may not fit into the over the door shoe organizer.

8. Step back and take in all the feels of completing your closet makeover- YOU DID IT!
